Image Galleries – Which is best ???

We’re currently evaluating several gallery modules for Joomla.  I’ll try to keep a list of the interesting ones here:

Product (& URL in Extensions) Score

SIGE

 http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/photos-a-images/galleries/content-photo-gallery/13762

SIGE – Simple Image Gallery Extended – Joomla! 3.x

SIGE is a powerful gallery content plugin for Joomla!

Usage:

{gallery}folder{/gallery} (in the directory images or from root, if option -Starting from the root directory?- is activated)

With parameters:

{gallery}folder,parameter1=1,parameter2=1…{/gallery}

How to use it properly:

1. Create a gallery with all features you want to use. The option ‘Thumbnail storage’ should be used. (Individual galleries are created using the parameters function.)
2. You should activate the turbo mode when the gallery is created, setting ‘turbo = 1’ at the syntax call. SIGE will create two text files including the complete HTML output, which will be loaded in further site calls. Like this the time consuming image processing does not have to be done each time the plugin is loaded.

Before diving into using this module, there are a few basic ‘Pre-Launch’ instructions you’ll need to do. If your going to use the ‘Render Photos from a Joomla folder‘ feature, create a new folder inside your Joomla’s ‘images’ directory and FTP upload your photos into this newly created folder. You can also upload your photos using the native Joomla ‘Media Manager’ one photo at a time. Go to your Responsive Photo Gallery module and adjust the options to your needs within the ‘General Settings’ and ‘Render Photos from a Joomla folder’ tabs. If your going to pull your photos from aFlickr Photoset, adjust the module options within the ‘General Settings’ and ‘Render Photos from a Flickr Photoset’ tabs. Once completed select what module position you want to use, publish, select what menus you wish to associate Responsive Photo Gallery to, save and…DONE!

Like all extensions, there are a few key rules to follow.

  1. If your using more then one Responsive Photo Gallery on a single page you’ll need to assign each one with a unique ‘Gallery Number’ (Ranges are 1 to 50).
