Description
Russell joined Cunard Brocklebank shipping line in 1977, at age 16, as a Deck Cadet sailing from Bremen, Northern Germany. With various promotions and career moves via Hong Kong, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Hull, he eventually left international shipping with the position of Master (ie. Captain, to you and me) at P&O North Sea Ferries. Seeking a more stable family life, Russell was appointed Assistant Harbour Master for the River Humber with Associated British Ports, in 2005. However, he preferred the active life, and became an Unlimited Marine Pilot on the River Tyne, meaning he is allowed to pilot any ship, any size, of any type! He retired in 2022.
Russell’s talk will be in two parts, firstly covering his seagoing career, including disasters, with the second part covering his time ashore in the port industry, and as a Pilot on the River Tyne, into Newcastle.
Russell lives in Darlington, County Durham, and will present his talk over Zoom.
