The Extraordinary Voyage of Mary Bryant

In 1791 Mary and William Bryant, their two children (one a baby in arms) and 7 other prisoners stole the governor’s boat and escaped from the penal colony of New South Wales. They successfully completed a journey in distance (over 3000 miles) similar to Bligh’s to West Timor. On Mary’s return to London she became quite a celebrity with the assistance of the most famous barrister of his time, James Boswell. A lot has been written about Mary Bryant although she has lapsed into obscurity from time to time. John Apps will explore both the legend that has grown up around Mary Bryant and the facts, which are perhaps not quite so glamorous.
