Sharing the Solent – a Southampton Pilot’s perspective

The Solent is many things to many people. For the many sailors, both in yachts and dinghies, the Solent is their playground. For Bill, it’s his place of work.  How we share this space in a mostly harmonious manner is the main theme of his presentation.  He will describe his role as a Southampton pilot for commercial vessels both large and small, and how the ship’s passage is planned and executed in and out of the port.   He will also, briefly, cover his own passage from a deep sea merchant navy officer to senior pilot and the training required.

Bill is a qualified master mariner who, during his time at sea, was captain of tankers and liquified gas carriers both large and small.  Since coming ashore he has worked as an MCA Surveyor and, for the last twenty five years, has been an authorised Southampton Pilot specialising in the largest tankers using the port.  He is also an associate lecturer at Warsash Maritime Academy’s Ship Handling Centre.
