Description

History of Fort Nelson – This is a broad history of Fort Nelson and the fortifications of Portsmouth.  The talk starts from the Royal Commission of 1859 and includes graphics created by the Portsmouth Forts Society that show the development of the fort system in the Portsmouth area.  It goes into some detail of the intended armament and how the fort would have fought off an enemy.

The talk goes on to the restoration work and new life as a museum and also covers the role of the Palmerston Forts Society in that work.

Lewis Sharp is a Retired Mechanical Engineer and Secretary of the Palmerston Forts Society – a registered charity with the mission of researching and disseminating knowledge about these fortifications and supporting their restoration and presentation to the public wherever possible.
