The walk is around the flood-plane of the river, around National Trust land. It follows the red line on the diagram, below.

WALK – Directions:

Meet at the NT car park. Leave at the northern end through a gate onto the open common land, and head along a track over open grassland towards the river, where you will join the Thames Path.

Turn left to follow the path. After about 25 minutes we reach the railway and foot bridge to Bourne End, but stay on the Thames path and pass the Bounty Pub on your left. Alternatively at the railway bridge enter the footpath in the field that runs at the rear of the properties facing the river.

Both options meet at the point on the map where a shorter route is available by turning left and following the blue path on the map and joining the footpath leading back to the Thames Path and the car park (or wait on the seat at that point for others completing the longer route).

Main route – continue to follow the path alongside the river that eventually leads into a section of the path along the edge of a cultivated field. Eventually the path turns left across the field towards Winter Hill. On leaving the field through the kissing gate join the double track that skirts the edge of Winter Hill and leads towards Cock Marsh Nature Reserve (possibly joining others who may have taken the shorter route or perhaps stopped at The Bounty for a drink).

The track follows the edge of the hill and nature-reserve leading to a bridge under the railway line. The path skirts the edge of Winter Hill Golf Club and continues alongside a small stream known as The Strand. Keep following the path and take the left-hand route a Y junction and follow the stream – the path emerges in about ½ a mile beside the side car park where you started the walk.

Total Distance of the main route 3.5 miles on level ground – the shorter route is slightly under 3 miles.

LUNCH is booked for 13.00 at The Crown – a very short walk towards Cookham from the NT Car Park as shown by the arrow on the map.

Please book using the form below, and indicate if you will be taking the long-walk, short-walk, or just joining us for lunch.
