9999-99-99 Events How To

Events Articles

This is a quick note to remind us how to use this, infrequently accessed, page.

The Side-Bar Events Menu can point to each discrete news item, creating a history of what we’ve done.

This Top-Menu Events Menu is intended to be a summary of the important Events that the reader needs to know about.

This menu is a Featured Articles Blog, looking for the high-profile articles in the Events Category.

To have your article appear here:

  1. Create a discrete article about the Event.  Ideally the Article will evolve from an announcement, to planing details, to a historical record of what happened
  2. Give the Article a title, that begins with the date (in yyyy-mm-dd format).  This will ensure that the articles appear in reverse order (with the newer events at the top of the page).  eg. 2021-03-21 Rally to Nowhere
  3. If you want the article to be featured on this page, set the Featured Article attribute on the article.
  4. If you want the article to appear on the Events side-bar menu, add a corresponding Single Article menu-item on the Events menu (you will need to use the Administrator Back-End to do this currently – we’re looking for an automatic way to acheive this)

A Short Note About Articles

Remember that Joomla is a Content Management System, not a Website.  Treat it like you’re writing for a Newspaper, and Joomla will do a lot of work for you, transparently, and put things in the right place, automatically.

It works best if we treat discrete news items or announcements as discrete Articles rather than updating a single web page.

Ideally, we will have one Article about each event, and perhaps a discrete Article reviewing the year.

This way, one person is in charge of each Article, and Joomla brings them together as a complete Website.
