Visit to Chatham Historic Dockyard - Saturday 15th November

by Paul Farrell

27 of us enjoyed this coach trip and visit to Chatham Historic Dockyard, thanks to Roger Knight who organised the day.

There was a guided coach tour of the site on arrival,  a group visit to the Ropery and free time to visit other attractions. It rained for much of the day but there were enough gaps in the showers for us to see all the exhibits.

The submarine was surprisingly cramped inside (but we were out of the rain...).

You can see the torpedo tubes - the ones on the left  say "loaded"

The highlight was the Ropery, which is quarter of a mile long.  Its so big, the staff go around on bicycles

We had a demonstration and "volunteers" actually made a  rope in front of us.

I still don't quite understand why the rope holds together but it was a very nice day out..
