Description

At his restoration to the throne in Charles II was given a ‘yacht’ by the Dutch, introducing the word and the idea to England. He built many more, but his successors did not all share his love of sailing. Richly decorated royal yachts brought in new monarchs, faced battle and storm and ferried the aristocracy for nearly two centuries until Queen Victoria discovered that steam was more efficient.

Brian Lavery is an author, British naval historian and curator Emeritus at the National Maritime Museum. Brian presents material from his forthcoming book on Royal Yachts under Sail
